My hamster is hissing?!?

I've had him for four months, and we hold him and let him run around in his ball for a while. But when we take him out of the cage and do the hand over hand walk, he starts hissing and his ears stick up. What is he doing? It's not like he's biting or anything, and he's a smart rodent. But why does he hiss?
