Can an extra layer of glaze protect me from lead paint in pottery?

yes. However, you should be able to test the bowl to see if there is lead pigment in it. Paint stores sell lead test kits, they are cheap and reliable, especially ones you buy at specialty paint stores like sherwin williams or duron. I dont know if a potter could re-glaze it. But if so it would protect from the lead. I would test it first.
